Fact-checking agency Factz Checker has hit back at the Tories by changing their official Twitter handle to @IfBorisSaidItThenItsDefinitelyABigFatLie.

The move comes after the Conservative Party temporarily rebranded one of its Twitter accounts as a “fact-checking” site for the duration of Tuesday’s televised leaders’ debate between Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn

The @CCHQPress account, the Tory press office, was renamed “factcheckUK” for the duration of the hour-long TV show but continued to tweet entirely fact-free content

Factz Checker spokesman, George Fishlove, says the rebranding of the Tory account wouldn’t have fooled anyone and was probably just another “dead cat” to distract from the lack of facts emitted from Boris Johnson’s mouth during the head-to-head debate.

Conservative Party chairman James Cleverly, who is responsible for the party’s digital campaigning, has called on Twitter to immediately suspend the Factz Checker account on the grounds that people will believe anything they read on social media.

“It is outrageous, and people will definitely be fooled into thinking that everything the prime minister says is a lie if they read it on Twitter,” Mr Cleverly said.

“We want voters to believe our facts and filling the internet with facts that aren’t our facts make our facts look like non-facts.

“And that’s a fact.”

Update: After this article was published, The Post Truth Post was informed by Factz Checker that the organisation had received a formal complaint from Number 10 Downing Street.

In response to the complaint, Factz Checker has now removed all reference to Boris Johnson being a liar from their Twitter handle, which is now simply - @FactHuntBorisJohnson
